Here at SW+A we’re thinking a little differently about employee engagement. We call our approach “Spirit of 32” and this blog series will chronicle our journey. We’ll share what we’re learning along with resources you can leverage. We’ll be your test bed so if you have ideas, please let us know.

Six in 10 Canadians say they are tired most of the time.  Canadians aged 25-44 admit to cutting back on sleep when they need more time.  Sleep, or lack thereof, has become a national epidemic.  And seriously, you need sleep to survive.  The causes of sleeplessness are numerous:

The benefits of a good night’s sleep include:

  • Better overall health
  • Less stress
  • More energy
  • Better mood
  • Strong immunity
  • Less pain (curb inflammation)
  • Lower risk of injury
  • Better weight control
  • Improved memory
  • Clearer thinking
  • Positive thinking
  • Spurs creativity
  • Enhanced athletic performance
  • Enhanced work performance

Strategies for an effective night’s sleep:

  • Make your bedroom a Sleep-Only zone – eliminate technology from the bedroom
  • Make your bedroom a Sleep-Friendly zone – keep room dark, cool, well-ventilated, noise-free
  • Set a schedule and stick to a routine – consistent sleep and wake time
  • Have a relaxing bedtime ritual – cultivate healthy habits
  • Avoid caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, spicy foods
  • Zero in on daytime worries – lie down on a positive note and think about tomorrow’s success

Wishing you restful Zzzz’s!
