Here at SW+A we’re thinking a little differently about employee engagement. We call our approach “Spirit of 32” and this blog series will chronicle our journey. We’ll share what we’re learning along with resources you can leverage. We’ll be your test bed so if you have ideas, please let us know.

Managing energy, not time is the key to enduring high performance as well as to health, happiness and life balance.’ – Jim Loehr, Tony Schwartz

Energy, not time.

This is a game changer. I’ve literally swapped out the word ‘time’ for ‘energy.

Before: Can you spare some time?

After:   Can you spare some energy?

Time.  It’s so…linear.  Finite.  Out of my control.

Energy. It’s multi-dimensional. In my control.  Expandable.

You see, at our annual SW&A summer off site, Theresa Robinson of Human Performance Institute trained our team on the Corporate Athlete Program. The key premise: ‘The most precious resource that we human beings possess is our energy.’

As Theresa taught, energy possesses quantity, quality, focus and intensity. So here’s how I’ve been e x p a n d i n g my energy of late:

Quantity: More physical energy via movement throughout the work day (scheduled stretches, walking meetings, sporadic 1-minute planks with co-workers), nutrition (eat light and eat often) and sleep (no more iPad before bedtime)

Quality: More positive energy such as optimism (I’m excited about life!) and gratitude (I love my clients : )

Focus: Work in sprints (Finish. Blog. Now.)

Intensity: Full commitment (Best. Blog. Ever.)

Result?  Energy levels are UP.

So keep this idea top of mind by swapping out ‘time’ with ‘energy’.

Before: Spend time with the kids

After:   Spend energy with your kids (watch ‘The 9 O’Clock Daddy’)

Before: Book some time in the calendar

After:   Book some energy in the calendar

I’m telling you. Game changer.
